Why I Love Sports Romance

March 21, 2017

It's Release Day for the HOT ON ICE anthology!

I love sports, and so to me, sports romances are pretty much the best thing ever. Why? It’s the team mentality, the fact that these guys will do anything for their teammates. It’s the locker room antics and banter, the chemistry and closeness that develops from spending hours together in training, playing, and traveling.

Athletes are known for discipline, dedication, and a leave-it-all-out-there-on-the-field-of-battle, “no guts, no glory” attitude. I love seeing how the guys have each other’s backs, both on the field or ice and in the locker room. These are all traits that I want in my romance hero, too.

Going one step further than the team aspect, most of us love seeing guys in a bromance, and it exists both on the pages of a sports romance novel and in real life. Several hockey, football, and baseball players I follow have that one BFF (or two or three) who they spend so much time with. Whether it’s who they sit with on the team plane, or go out to dinner with on the road, or room with, or hang out with during the off-season, these guys just click. In books, it’s often this character who will help the hero see what he truly wants or needs in the romantic relationship.

My story for the Hot on Ice Anthology is Making His Move. Back-up goaltender Rod Fraser is a free agent in every sense. He’s ready for a new team and hoping for a shot with his best friend’s sister. But Arielle Charton thinks Rod’s interest is fleeting, and she doesn’t need the distraction. She’s busy rebuilding her life. Rod’s made his living making impossible saves, but it will take the impossible to convince the shy artist that she’s won his heart.

I hope you'll check out the anthology. Each story is about a player on the Cup-winning Cajun Rage, an expansion team that surprised the hockey world when they skated away with the Cup. Plus, 20% of the royalties will go to Homes For Our Troops, a non-profit that builds mortgage-free, specially modified homes for severely injured veterans, a cause that is very close to my heart.
