When one door closes...

November 20, 2017

Today's Upbeat Authors topic is: When one door closes, another one opens.

Alexander Graham Bell's full quote is: “When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”

He was talking about missed opportunities. If you dwell on one specific thing or opportunity, then you miss all of the other avenues, options, and opportunities that exist.

Many people don't like change. They resist it. But not all change is bad. Change is often necessary, however uncomfortable it may be. From a fitness perspective, trainers have said that if you want to change your body, then you need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. And it's true. Pushing your body through workouts hurts and isn't fun, but you do it because you know the end result -- better conditioning and health -- is worth it.

But staring at that slammed or shut door hurts, especially if it's closing off something that you've worked toward or dreamed about or think is a necessary step. Failures and set-backs aren't reasons to quit. Let them be fuel for your fire as you forge new opportunities.

Some people view a closed door as a loss or failure, when it could actually be an opportunity for development and growth. Maybe the thing you missed out on wasn't right for you at that time. Always, always look at it that way. And remember, there isn't one way to do or accomplish something. Your chance is still out there, and is still attainable.

And if that thing you missed out on truly was a unable-to-be-replicated, once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity, make peace with the fact that it wasn't the right opportunity for you, or it wasn't what you truly needed. I'm a firm believer that all the things we need will come to us, but may not come in the way we anticipate them.
