Helping others is this week's Upbeat Authors topic. Remember, you can view all of the posts from participating authors by searching the #UpbeatAuthors tag on social media sites.

There are a lot of quotes and ideas about helping others. SO many. But for me, it comes down to a few things:

I believe this is what we're all called to do. We're here to make a difference. To help each other. To be the good that someone sees in the world. To make the world better.

Helping can be as small as holding a door for someone, to driving someone somewhere, buying someone's groceries, serving the community, volunteering at a shelter, to something as large as helping to provide clean drinking water in developing countries.

The opposite of love isn't hate, it's fear. If you do things from a place of love, that echoes back to you, and it echoes out into the world, helping to shape other actions and thoughts in a positive manner. The same is true on the other side, operating from a place of fear, hatred, pettiness, results in actions that cause harm. Which would you rather do?

The story of the two wolves describes this too:

An old man (in most stories, he is a Cherokee chief) is teaching his grandson about life:

"A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil–he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego."

He continued, "The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

So feed the good wolf, and if you come from a place of kindness and love and peace and compassion, helping others is a natural extension.
